Main Cliff Trail Day recap

On Sunday, August 25th the Ragged Mountain Foundation and Trinity College Quest teamed up once again to make trail improvements for Connecticut climbing. The team of 25 student leaders along with board members George Maynard, Scott Sampietro, Kevin Johnson and member Liz Bannon spent the morning hauling rock and building a retaining wall below Carey Corner and Vanishing Point.

Trinity College Quest leaders building a retaining wall

Led by seasoned trail steward Maynard, student leaders used the grip hoist and rock baskets to move rock from below the retaining wall up slope to help reduce trail erosion along the popular southend of the cliff. In addition to improving the trail, student leaders also cut back brush and invasive speices along the base of the cliff.

Partnerships like the ones we have with Rock Climb Fairfield and Trinity College are important for the RMF when we require many hands for major trail improvements. The RMF also relies heavily on our membership and volunteers to continually push the organization in the right direction. As we approach the fall climbing season, we hope to have more trail days for folks to get involved with. We also understand that heavy lifting is not for everyone, but you can still help in other ways. Please consider donating, attending an RMF or partnered event, or signing up for our traprock tier membership plan.

Future projects at the Main Cliff will focus on erosion control at the southend of the cliff. Be on the lookout for the next trail date which will be posted on the website.

A special thank you to the Trinity College Quest program and their leaders for volunteering their time and energy to improve a major climbing resource in Central Connecticut.
